PROFESSOR OF EMERITUS T. P. CHAUDHURI

Professor Emeritus Dr. Tara Pad Chaudhuri (15 January 1912- 22 January 2003), a honourable guru, friend, philosopher, guide and a well-known contemporary economist is no more with us. The light has gone out. He passed away on 22 January 2003 at the age of 91 in Kathmandu. The entire CEDECON family is extremely sad at his demise and prays to God for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Professor Chaudhuri was born in a lower middle class merchant family at Puruliya District of the then West Bengal. Late Chaudhuri was brilliant, dedicated and disciplined since his school life. Chaudhuri was studying I. Sc. at Besaliyan Missionary Collage, Bakura District, West Bengal but compelled to drop his education after the death of his father in 1930. In the same year he went to Calcutta and again started his college education by earning his expenses through taking tuition. The process continued till when he joined Usha Gram High School as a teacher in 1942. Chaudhuri got master’s degree in math (1937), Statistics (1944) and economics (1948) from Calcutta University. He also got Ph. D. degree in self-finance from London School of Economics in 1954.
Service carries of late Chaudhuri starts from Usha Gram High School as a teacher in 1942. After getting master’s in statistics Chaudhuri got appointment in Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta in 1944 and served in different capacity till his retirement in 1972. Late Chaudhuri’s devotion to Swami Bibekananda inspired him to establish a trust in Kolkata to organize lecture series on philosophy of Swami Bibekananda.

Prof. T. P. Chaudhuri is not a new name to the intellectuals of Nepal. He arrived at TU first as a Colombo Plan Professor of economics in 13 November1960 and served till April 1969 at Department of Economics, TU. His arrival generated relief in a situation when there was a critical shortage of qualified and experienced teachers. During his service in Nepal (1960-69) he established Tara Pad Chaudhuri Medals for the students of economics securing highest marks in the final examination of Bachelor and Master’s degree.
After his retirement from Indian Statistical Institute again Prof. Chaudhuri joined the Department of Economics as a professor on 15th August 1975 and continued his service till his death. Impressing his outstanding contribution in academic field at TU he was awarded Professor of Emeritus by TU on 27th September 1999. He is only one person who got the prestigious post in the history of TU. Professor Chaudhuri was also famous by dadaji among the children, adult and old people in the university family and outside those who are familiar with him. Similarly, some of the intellectuals compared him with Bhisma Pitamaha of Mahabharat.
Prof. Chaudhuri was sincere on educational development of Nepal and set up a research trust donating his full salary since his joining CEDECON second time with the aim to involve faculty members on research work to improve the quality of teaching in economics. His affection to Nepal and Nepali people is proved from his word “until the end of my life I will be here” when some of the faculty member of the CEDECON shown willingness to help him to send his home town Kolkota while he shown his inability to visit his home.
A scholar coming far away from Nepal and having dedicated his life and assets so compassionately for the improvement of teaching and research in economics in Nepal is an ideal example of sacrifice and devotion that late Prof. Chaudhuri has had set during his life time. Establishment of gold medal for the students of economics and population studies and Tara Pada Chaudhuri Research Trust is immemorial contribution of Prof. Chaudhuri.He will remain in our heart forever and his name will be written in the golden letters in the history of CEDECON. Late Prof. Chaudhuri has been a great source of inspiration to all contemporary and future generations of economists in Nepal and the region. Therefore, we would like to place on record the pace-setting contribution of Professor Emeritus Dr. Tara Pad Chaudhuri to the overall development of CEDECON.
