Master in Economics ( M.A)

CEDECON has been offering Master’s level program in economics for more than four decades since the establishment of TU in 1959. The M.A. programme is a two-year program consisting of five papers each year including one optional paper selected from among various optional papers offered. Each paper comprises 100 full marks and 40 percent pass marks. The M. A. degree in economics will be awarded to the students after successfully completion of all ten papers in the annual examination conducted by the Office of the Controller of Examination, TU.

Eligibility for Admission

The students having Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) degree with majoring economics from TU or any other universities recognised by TU are eligible to apply for M. A. Programme. However, the students with mathematics, statistics and management background may also apply. Students, willing to study M. A. in economics at CEDECON are required to submit application upon receiving a call to apply from the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Application form will be available from the Administration Section of the department on payment of specified fees. Students are required to get through entrance examination organised by Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, TU in beginning of December. Generally, academic session will start from January to October each year.

CURRICULUM

CEDECON offers 22 courses at master’s level comprising eight compulsory and 14 optional papers including thesis writing. The existing courses offered for M. A. program in economics are as follows.

Some changes have been made in the optional papers both in the first and second year effective from January 2007 considering the growing issues and contents of economic themes around the globe. Industrial Economics, Marketing Economics and Modern Economic Development of USA, UK, Russia, Germany, Japan, India, China will be deleted and Economics of Tourism will be offered in the first year where Environmental and Natural Resource Economics will be shifted from second year to first year syllabus. Similarly, Rural Economics and Managerial Economics will be omitted. Instead of these courses Human Development Economics, Transport Economics and Health Economics will be offered in the second year.

Economics Subject Committee is the apex body for designing and implementing curriculum on economics at all levels of higher education (from intermediate to master’s level) with the approval of the Faculty Board under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Subject Committee headed by the Chairman of the CEDECON as ex-officio Chairman, reviews the curriculum each year and necessary improvements and adjustments are made at the interval of each five years.
